The Halstead Marathon began in 1995 and was the idea of Colin Richer, a former club member and local businessman. In order to maintain a marathon within the county of Essex the race became an annual event. This has been possible mainly due to a core of supporters within Halstead Road Runners and with help from Braintree District Council and Halstead Town Council. In addition, local commerce support the race as do various voluntary organisations, scout and cadet groups who provide invaluable support on race day. Not only do we have an event for our area that is supported by local people but many running clubs from across the region support us each year with marshals.
The race attracts athletes from across the UK and abroad and the furthest know travelers to the race have come from Dubai and Omaha Running Club, USA.
North Essex is relatively unrecognised as an area of extreme beauty but has an abundance of hidden back roads amongst rolling hills, woods and farmlands.
Even more attractive to runners is that, apart from a 400m stretch in the last mile, the race is entirely on roads with very little traffic.
As a club we believe we have been able to offer a well organised race from start to finish, with every facility to make the it attractive to experienced and new marathon runners alike. The course has some hills but is far from a Potteries or Snowdonia course. The ladies record has been broken five times and is currently 2:58:22 (Fiona Oakes, 2007) but we are still waiting for the male record of 2:38:02 (Pete Johnson) set at the first race in 1995 to be broken. There must be someone out there and don't forget the £200 prize for record breakers (male and female).
The 2010 Halstead and Essex Marathon has been awarded the Essex County Championships. We are also pleased to be part of the Road Runners Club Marathon Championships. Two great accolades for our event.
Halstead Road Runners is a small club of around seventy-five members in a rural area. We ask a lot from our members every year to support an all day event. We hope for yet another record number of entrants this year to recognise a marathon tradition in East Anglia that is held together by ourselves and the Black Dog race in Suffolk. We are a friendly race and all are welcome.
As always, we hope to meet both old friends and new on race day.
