Andy Wilmot and Bob Parmenter did the 100 Marathon Club Winter Challenge off road marathon at Stevenage. Weather was good, if a bit cold. Underfoot conditions were surprisingly good, with only a couple of particular "boggy" sections. Andy finished in 4h 40m, Bob in 5h 39m.

Bob Parmenter also did the 100 Marathon Club A.G.M Marathon, at Bromley. Mainly a road course, with a few miles of frozen "off road" tracks. Really cold day, with a mild but biting wind, on some exposed parts of the course. Bob finished in 4hrs 34mins 05secs (his second best Marathon time ever!)

WELL DONE to all!

» Halstead & Essex Ultra
05 Jan 2009 - 12:57 PM - by Nathan
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Halstead & Essex Marathon, Halstead Road Runners are staging a new event for 2009.

In addition to the Marathon there will also be a 30 mile Ultra Marathon run on the same course. The Ultra will start at 9:45AM - shortly before the main race at 10:00AM. Competitors will run the full marathon course plus an additional four mile loop.

“The organising committee wanted to add something special to mark our 15th event” said Nathan Roulson, Race Director.

“We are regularly asked if we would apply our expertise to hosting a shorter race along side the marathon, such as a half marathon or 10k. But our small club would be unable to find sufficient volunteers to marshal the additional roads and runners and the popularity of the shorter race could detract from the main event. It’s very important we maintain the high standard of our marathon which is recognised nationally”.

The Halstead & Essex Marathon was voted 10th best race in the UK by readers of Runners World magazine in February 2008, beating the London Marathon, Great North Run and a host of other commercial, well-known and respected races.

“Ultra running is becoming increasingly popular” Nathan continued “and there are very few events in the South East of the UK. Distance events are what we do well and we determined that a longer event could be held alongside the marathon without asking too much more from our club members and volunteers who already have a very long day”.

“The existing 26.2 mile marathon course lends itself to Ultra distances of 30, 35 and 38 miles. We decided to start small with the shorter distance and include a fairly generous cut-off for runners starting the additional 4 mile loop - 25 miles within 4:15. Runners failing to reach this point within the allotted time will be directed by marshals to continue on to complete the marathon course and score accordingly”.

"The cut-off is primarily intended to keep the Ultra within the marathon’s current time limit which is in place out of respect to our volunteer marshals".

As per the marathon, there will be a tail bike and nobody will be left out on course. Signage and water will be in place until the last runner finishes and many of our marshals choose to stay out on course until the last runner has passed by.

This also means that should an ultra runner feel during the race that they are not going to complete the distance they can drop out of the ultra and ‘just’ run the marathon.

The 4 mile loop runs from Star Stile (Ultra runners will turn left for a second time) to Levitt’s Corner, turning left again and then following the marathon course to the finish. An updated course map will be published on our website and will be included with runner’s info pack.

“If the Ultra proves a success we may hold it again in the future. There has been a lot of interest on the Runners World forums so we expect to be oversubscribed this year. As always, we’ll listen to the post race feedback from both the runners and marshals because we want to continue to hold a fantastic day for all concerned”.

Ultra entries will be limited to 40 runners and will not be taken on the day (to facilitate bespoke race numbers), instead closing on 1st March.

Runners wishing to enter the Ultra first need to enter the marathon in the usual way and then request entry via ultra@HalsteadAndEssexMarathon.co.uk . Ultra runners need to provide recent marathon and ultra racing history along with finish times (in the expectation that only those who genuinely can meet the cut-off apply for the small number of places available for 2009).
There will be an additional entry fee of £5 to cover the cost of the bespoke Ultra runner’s race number and quality bespoke finisher’s t-shirt (Ultra runners will also receive the same goody bag as marathon runners).

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Halstead & Essex Marathon, Halstead Road Runners are staging a new event for 2009.

In addition to the marathon there will also be a 30 mile Ultra Marathon run on the same course.

The Ultra will start shortly before the main race at 9:45AM. Competitors will run the full marathon course plus an additional four mile loop.

Our volunteers and marshals already have a very long day supporting the marathon, therefore runners will be required to reach the start of the extra loop at just after 25 miles within 4:15 to be allowed to continue with the Ultra (runners failing to reach this point can continue to complete the marathon and score accordingly).

So as not to detract from our highly regarded marathon, Ultra entries will be strictly limited.

Full details of the entry procedure will be announced on www.HalsteadAndEssexMarathon.co.uk on 2-Jan.

Please note runners will need to have already entered the 2009 marathon before applying for a place in the Ultra.

There is parking at the Hall and on the opposite side of Felixstowe Road but both have height restrictions of 2 metres – please advise me if this causes a problem.

IT IS THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE FROM THE HALL TO THE START SO PLEASE ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO THE COURSE.

AT THE FINISH – There will be a container for team captains to leave their score-sheets for first 8 (6) men and first 4 (3) women. Please do not wait until all your runners are home before filling this out as this will delay the results. Results will be announced in the Community Hall asap (around midday).
