HALSTEAD ROAD RUNNER JUNIORS WIN THE LEAGUE

The final race of the 53-12 Cross Country League 2009/2010 was held at Hadleigh on Sunday.

The running conditions were very wet, cold and windy and the course very challenging. This however did not stop the Juniors from another super performance. Kinza Lewis came 1st U13 girl with a fantastic sprint finish. Kinza is really improving as a runner, finishing the last 2 races in excellent form and will certainly be one to watch next season. Great performances also from Luke Allen, James Walker, Sophia Diss, Amy Thacker and Samuel Jones.

After the races had finished the final league results were announced and awards given. The Junior team had every reason to be proud of themselves, finishing the league in 3rd position.

Halstead do not have juniors competing in all the age groups in this league. So to finish just behind Discovery Triathlon Club and the winners Colchester & Tendering AC who both have some superb athletes, is a great achievement for this young squad.

This however is not their only success in this league. At the finish of this league all the individual athletes points are calculated and an overall Male and Female League Winner is awarded.

This year the 53-12 XC League Champion 2009/2010 Boy was awarded to Halsteads Luke Allen who scored near perfect points. Luke has produced some outstanding performances finishing 1st Under 11 and coming home first for Halstead in every race. This is a well deserved title for this talented young athlete who has competed against some very strong and experienced boys throughout this season.

The League Champion Girl was also proudly won by Halstead and was awarded to Amy Thacker. She has produced some super performances in all the races and is going from strengh to strengh. This is also a well earned title for her.

Winning 3 Age Groups and Male and Female League Champion is a fantastic result for Halstead. Junior Coach Peri Collins said "I am really pleased with the final results, the way our juniors have performed throughout this league and their commitment at such a young age is incredible, this is a huge achievement for the club and we are very proud of all our juniors". Peri can be contacted for Junior membership enquiries on 01787 223150.

HRR Junior results:

Luke Allen 5th (1st U11 boy)
James Walker 9th (3rd U11 boy)
Kinza Lewis 11th (1st U13 girl)
Sophia Diss 16th (3rd U13 girl)
Amy Thacker 26th (1st U11 girl)
Samuel Jones 34
Jack Thacker 41
Daisy Partridge 44
Chloe Cracknell 45

The seniors competed over a tough 5 mile course with enormous puddles dotting the terrain. Roll on next season and special thanks to sponsors 53-12 of Colchester.

Distance specialist Matt Biggin ran the 2010 Moonlight Challenge in deepest darkest Kent for a second time. Matt reported “The weather this year was rather better than last year in as much as it wasn't freezing. The course was trickier though as there was deep mud in sections that had to be negotiated”

80 runners attempted the 32.75 miles and Matt came 7th overall with a time of 5 hours 7 minutes. A 12 minute improvement on his time from last year! Matt accredited this to having had a year of endurance training and also better planning. Matt said “Hydration and nutrition are key elements to successfully completing an ultra and I went through 4 litres of electrolyte/water and 9 gels”

Jeremy Gore completed an impressive performance in the Serpentine RRC ‘Last Friday of the month 5k’ in London. Jeremy recorded a PB (personal best) in 22mins 15secs

Jeremy said “It was blowing a gale in Hyde Park which made it heavy going for the first 3k”

Here are the final standings for the handicap:

Third: Peri Collins (36 points)
Fourth: Lorraine Garnham (34 points)

If anyone has any suggestions for ways to improve the handicap system for next season, then don't hesitate to put them forward.

A special mention must go to Wendy Carter and Mark Armitage for braving the elements after recovering from illness. Katy Fidler for competing in such adverse conditions and Peri Collins for racing with a poorly back.

With illness and injury decimating their team, Halstead Road Runners were represented by just two runners in last Saturday's South of England Athletic Association Cross Country Championships, held on the infamous course at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath, London.

Weather conditions were near perfect - cool and bright with light winds and the overnight frost ensured that some parts of the course remained relatively firm. However, with thousands of athletes trampling the ground in the nine earlier races, some parts of the course were like a quagmire by the time the senior men lined up for their 15k (9.3 miles) race.

Gavin Allen was in great form finishing in 1 hour 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Although nearly 20 minutes behind, 53 year old Andy Carter ran strongly throughout and finished with a time of 1-22-06. Fellow clubmate Andrew Warner, competing for his first claim club Orion Harriers, celebrated his 23rd birthday with a fine run, crossing the finish line in 1-08-22. Race positions not available at time of press release.

Full results made available after press release:

Gavin Allen 210 (1:02:20)
Andrew Warner 399 (1:08:22)
Andy Carter 700 (1:22:08)

WELL DONE to all!
