Julia reported:
“It was cloudy, overcast and very breezy as gales had been forecast for later in the day on the coast. The main feature was the 'undulating' nature of the race. The steepest slope started in the High St at 3 and half miles and continued until 7 and half miles when we ran into the countryside. A very varied course with Christchurch Park, cemeteries, shopping centres and open countryside. Lots of cheering on from young families in Ipswich standing outside their houses”
131st Rob Thacker 1:38:52

Ultra Specialist Matt Biggin ran the Downland Challenge Ultra which is a 30 mile trail run across the South Downs, taking in sights such as the Jack & Jill Windmills and Ditchling Beacon which is the highest point on the South Downs. The route comprises of some significant hills requiring you to climb over 3000 feet. It was also hot pretty hot in the afternoon which meant keeping fluid levels and the factor-50 fully topped up.
The event is put on by Haywards Heath Harriers and they put on a very well organised race. Although the route wasn't signed or marshalled it would have been difficult to get lost due to the fact that the South Downs Way is pretty clearly sign-posted.
Matt finished the 30 mile course in 5 hours 14 minutes.
Matt reported ‘Highlights of the events were seeing a man running the same distance barefoot. Matt saw him at 15 miles and he was still going strong. The ground being covered was not at all barefoot friendly. Very rocky and probably very painful to run on’

Halstead Road Runners’ distance specialist Matt Biggin and friend Mike Hale clocked an amazing 101km on Sunday the 27th June. Special report from Matt Biggin:
“The Stour Valley Path stretches from Newmarket all the way to Cattawade, passing through some of the most beautiful countryside in England. My goal was to run the 101km route in one continuous effort. I knew it would be hard, had put the training time in and had planned for all sorts of issues, but what I'd never considered was that I would be running it on the hottest day of the year.
I wasn't doing this alone though, my friend Mike planned to mountain bike along with me. In fact he provided much inspiration during the day with his fortitude and determination.
Heat didn't play much of a factor in the first 60kms and we reached Sudbury feeling good and knowing that we were well passed the half way mark. For the final 40kms the primary focus was heat management, fluid intake and simply putting one foot in front of the other. I finally finished in 13 hours and took a well earned dip in the Stour.
I offer our heartfelt thanks to HRR Members Nathan Roulson, Richard Tiller and Maurice Young for looking after us all day long. Without them there's little chance that we would have completed the route. Thanks also go to all those who offered their support.
The day was dedicated to Mike's mother who sadly passed away recently after battling cancer for several years. At the last count our efforts raised £1072 for the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity.”
