Wall and Zietsman win at Halstead
This Sunday saw the 14th Halstead and Essex Marathon organised by Halstead Road Runners. On a hot sunny day a festival mood settled across the start line from new race headquarters Halstead Leisure Centre. The race got underway at 10am following a briefing by Race Director Nathan Roulson.
Then it was off for 26.2 miles around the country lanes North East of Halstead through Pebmarsh and to Twinstead. Many runners commented on the beauty of the course and the kindness of the residents. Almost 500 runners set off with a broad range of ages and marathon experience in the field. For some it was their first marathon whilst for others this was to be 1 of 100s completed. One person for whom this was a very special day was 65 year old Keith Scrivener of Great Bentley RC. Keith completed his 100th marathon at Halstead in 5hrs 39mins 11secs and the club held an informal celebration for him at Race HQ.
Halstead Road Runners had eight finishers with Gavin Allen first home for the club in 3:17:23 and 22nd overall. Matthew Biggin who is the Halstead and Essex Marathon Entries Secretary finished 102nd overall. Andrew Wilmot finished 3rd in the Male 60 category. Overall positions as follows:
22nd 3:17:23 ALLEN, GAVIN
32nd 3:24:07 JAY, DEAN
86th 3:41:55 LANGLEY, BOB
102nd 3:46:06 BIGGIN, MATTHEW
146th 3:59:30 STINCHCOMBE, NIGEL
169th 4:05:51 WILMOT, ANDY
271st 4:36:51 FRIBBENS, MARK
288th 4:41:58 PARMENTER, BOB
The support from the marshals, local organisations and charities was immense. These included 1163 Squadron Air Cadets, Witham Army Cadets, Halstead Explorer Scouts, Halstead Day Centre staff, The League of friends of Halstead Hospital supporters, Essex Air Ambulance supporters and pupils of Gosfield School. The public of Halstead and villages also played a vital role as they cheered the runners round the undulating course. Many runners reported that they were inspired by the local vociferous support out on the lanes - some out with hoses and ice lollies for runners!
Water stations were manned by Gt Bentley RC, Tiptree RR, Witham RC, Harwich Runners and Woodlands Gym.
Halstead Road Runners would also like to thank Advance Performance, Asics, The Bird In Hand, Coop, The Dog Inn, Eat Natural, For Goodness Shakes!, Halstead and Haverhill Physiotherapy Clinic, Halstead Leisure Centre (especially Anita Morris), Halstead Town Council, Halstead Tyre & Exhaust Centre, Jointace, Lambert Chapman (especially Chris Harman), Munchy Seeds, Richard Edwards & Co, Runnersworld Ltd, Scott Maddison and Spice Zone.
Newly elected mayor David Hume was on hand in his first public duty of his term to present the winners trophies.
The first three men home were Hendrik Zietsman (Southend AC), Crispian Bloomfield (Billericay Striders) and then last years winner Nick Hodges (Dorking & Mole Valley AC). Results:
1st 2:38:17 Zietsman, Hendrik
2nd 2:48:06 Bloomfield, Crispian
3rd 2:54:54 Hodges, Nick
First lady home was Michala Wall (Lingfield RC) then Tina Hull (Grange Farm & Dunmow Runners). Third lady was Claire Gaskill (Istead and Ifield Harriers). Results:
1st (47th overall) 3:29:03 Wall, Michala
2nd (68th overall) 3:35:27 Hull, Tina
3rd (72nd overall) 3:38:48 Gaskill, Claire.
WELL DONE TO ALL!
