The new course involved two loops up and down the Hadleigh Downs then several miles along the seawall. There were 446 finishers in this popular race hosted by Benfleet Running Club.

Halstead Road Runner Juniors are continuing their success after winning the 4th race of the 53-12 Cross Country League in Hadleigh.

Leading the Halstead team home was Luke Allen in his first race since a foot injury which he sustained before Christmas. Allen had a super race and was hot on the heels of Suffolk County Champion Alex Baxter but did not quite have the distance to catch him on the final straight but settled for a well earned second position.

Following a great run at the Essex County Champs last weekend Emma Lovegrove continued her good form to finish next for Halstead in a very credible 3rd position. Young Freddie Trevanion continues to impress with a strong run to finish 8th. Both Emma and Freddie are currently first girl and boy in the league with 5 points each.

Tom Baslingdon, Henry Trevanion, Vicky Lovegrove and Hayden Challis continue to run well with other good performances from Matthew Allen, Kinza Lewis, Katie Armitage, Samuel Jones, Charlotte Armitage and Brook Greatorex. Mention must also go to Kathryn Lawrence in her cross country debut for Halstead.

2nd Luke Allen (2nd U13)
3rd Emma Lovegrove (1st U13)
8th Freddie Trevanion (1st U11)
12th Tom Baslingdon
18th Vicky Lovegrove (1st U11)

25th Hayden Challis
27th Kinza Lewis
28th Matthew Allen
51st Samuel Jones

53rd Kathryn Lawence
54th Brook Greatorex
56th Charlotte Armitage

Halstead Road Runner Gavin Allen kick started 2012 by competing in his first ever fell race, the Nine Standards Yomp in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. In a field of over 100 experienced fell runners and with a climb of over 2000 feet ahead, Allen worked hard and paced himself well to finish in an amazing 8th position.

Closer to home Allen also competed in the Essex County Championships in Basildon, the 12k course saw some of the best athletes in the county, Allen again raced well in a field of over 170 athletes to finish in 34th position. Allen competed for Braintree AC.

HALSTEAD JUNIORS VICTORIOUS AT GOSFIELD CROSS COUNTRY

The Halstead Road Runner Juniors are proving that they are the ones to beat in the 3rd race of the 53-12 cross country league which was held at Gosfield School.

The young squad only have runners in 4 out of the 6 age categories so to score high points is always going to be difficult, this however didn't prove to be a problem as
they won 2 out of the 4 groups with Halsteads Freddie Trevanion and Luke Allen winning their age categories.

In a field of 74 runners and on home ground the race started well and by the half way point Halsteads Luke Allen and another athlete had settled into 3rd and 4th positions, they had pulled away from the pack leaving a considerable gap and running their own race. By the time they had emerged from the woods for the home straight the gap was even bigger leaving several seconds before the next athletes appeared, Luke looked strong and steamed ahead to finished comfortably in 3rd position. Next to appear was a sea of yellow vests consisting of Tom Baslington, Emma Lovegrove, Henry Trevanion and Freddie Trevanion with an exciting battle between the club mates, Baslington managed to pull away and finish next for Halstead with a super run followed by a great run from Lovegrove. One of the youngest runners in this league Freddie Trevanion amazed the crowds with a strong finish, he is going from strengh to strengh and will certainly be one to watch in the future.

Mention must go to Ethan Constable who ran well in his cross country debut.

The Halstead Juniors finished joint first alongside Discovery Triathlon Club. Halstead are currently first in the league after 3 races.

3rd Luke Allen 1st under 13 boy
7th Tom Baslington 3rd under 13 boy
8th Emma Lovegrove 2nd under 13 girl
9th Henry Trevanion 4th under 13 boy
11th Freddie Trevanion 1st under 11 boy
26th Matthew Allen
28th Hayden Challis
35th Vicky Lovegrove 3rd under 11 girl
44th Daisy Partridge
47th Brooke Greatorex 4th under 11 girl
48th Sam Jones
51st Katie Armitage
53rd Wesley Anson
68th Delphine Masterson
69th Ethan Constable
71st Natasha Hill

The seniors were led home once again by Gavin Allen over the tough and enjoyable 5 mile course. Special recognition must be given to the Halstead ladies who still managed to field a complete team of 4 despite colds and injuries! At the half way point in the 53-12 sponsored Cross country season Halstead remain at the foot of the league Pool A with plenty of opportunity for a post-Christmas push! Full HRR results as follow:

Men:
8th Gavin Allen
29th Stuart Prestney
34th Phil Davies
43rd Andrew Warner
49th Nathan Roulson
55th Mark Armitage
58th Don English
65th Sam Wolton
67th Matthew Ranson
82nd Mike Grealy
167th Mick Purkiss

Women:
21st Maxine Rodwell
32nd Hazel Buist

71st Teresa Challis

Five athletes represented Halstead Road Runners in the Essex Veterans Cross Country Championships held at Chigwell Row over a 5 mile course. Conditions were more favourable than last year when lying snow made the ground slippery. By contrast this season was soft but not particularly muddy although the undulating woodland course still presented quite a challenge.

First home for Halstead in the Men’s over 50 race was Phil Davies with a great performance, placing 11th out of the 110 finishers in 36 minutes 32 seconds. Don English was next, crossing the line in 32nd place with a time of 38:43, followed by Mike Grealy 47th in 40:47. Completing the four man team was Andy Carter with 53rd position in a time of 41:55, placing the team 9th.

Halstead’s sole representative in the Women’s over 35 race was Wendy Carter with a fine performance, recording 35th out of 84 finishers with a time of 44:29

On Sunday 11th December Halstead Road Runners will be hosting round 3 of this seasons 53-12 Cross Country League. The 5 mile route will start and finish at Gosfield School and include a section in Broaks Wood. The senior race will be preceded by a junior fun run.

For senior membership enquiries please call Club Captain Wayne Kern 07801 722794 and for juniors (8-15 year olds) please contact Peri Collins 01787 223150.
