Matthew Ranson is organising a one-off track night and everyone is welcome. Please share transport where possible. Please note the EARLIER time. We will be sharing the track with one other club.
With illness and injury decimating their team, Halstead Road Runners were represented by just two runners in last Saturday's South of England Athletic Association Cross Country Championships, held on the infamous course at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath, London.
Weather conditions were near perfect - cool and bright with light winds and the overnight frost ensured that some parts of the course remained relatively firm. However, with thousands of athletes trampling the ground in the nine earlier races, some parts of the course were like a quagmire by the time the senior men lined up for their 15k (9.3 miles) race.
Gavin Allen was in great form finishing in 1 hour 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Although nearly 20 minutes behind, 53 year old Andy Carter ran strongly throughout and finished with a time of 1-22-06. Fellow clubmate Andrew Warner, competing for his first claim club Orion Harriers, celebrated his 23rd birthday with a fine run, crossing the finish line in 1-08-22. Race positions not available at time of press release.
Full results made available after press release:
Gavin Allen 210 (1:02:20)
Andrew Warner 399 (1:08:22)
Andy Carter 700 (1:22:08)

Sunday's cold, dry and still weather made for almost ideal running conditions for the popular Folksworth 15 mile race, which is fast becoming a regular training event for those doing the London Marathon later in the year. The 500 limit was reached well before Christmas, with two Halstead Road Runners obtaining places. The 2 lap course boasted 3 hills each time, which looked fairly mighty in a fenland setting but were not terribly significant by Halstead standards!
Alan Clack achieved a time of 1:55:28 and finished in 151st place, with Neil Murfitt coming 257th in 2:07:12.
Elsewhere in the region, HRR competed in the Ipswich cross country on Martlesham Heath sponsored by 53-12. Over a fast open 5.5 mile course the following senior results were recorded:

Both courses are mostly flat, mainly on tracks and footpaths which may be muddy depending on amount of rain. There will be signs and marshals warning the public of the race and guiding runners. First Aid cover will be provided by the Red Cross and marshals will be able to summon them if needed.
PARKING, TOILETS & CHANGING (NO SHOWERS) and POST-RACE REFRESHMENTS ARE AT THE MARTLESHAM COMMUNITY HALL (IP12 4PB).
£2 PER SENIOR RUNNER. NO GUESTS ALLOWED. NO JUNIORS FEE
Martlesham Community Hall is situated on Felixstowe Road very close to the Tesco superstore. Turn off the A12 into Anson Road. Go past the left turn to Tesco and take next left into Felixstowe Road. The Hall is on your left within 200 metres.
There is parking at the Hall and on the opposite side of Felixstowe Road but both have height restrictions of 2 metres – please advise me if this causes a problem.
IT IS THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE FROM THE HALL TO THE START SO PLEASE ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO THE COURSE.
AT THE FINISH – There will be a container for team captains to leave their score-sheets for first 8 men (4 in Pool B) and first 4 women (2 in Pool B). Please do not wait until all your runners are home before filling this out as this will delay the results. Full lists of runners, discs and cheque payment should be handed in at the Community Hall. Results will be announced in the Community Hall asap (around 12.30pm).

Halstead Road Runners Junior section have been getting themselves noticed in the recent 53-12 Junior Cross Country league (2009/2010).
This league is held over the winter months and consists of 6 races at different venues across Essex and Suffolk. The junior races normally attract an average of 52 runners and have 12 running clubs participating in this league.
Halstead junior Luke Allen 9 is one of the younger runners in this league and has been turning heads, consistently coming home first for Halstead and coming in the top 6 overall in all the races so far. Luke who is only just into his second season of cross country has shown some very impressive running which has won him the under 11 age category in every race so far. Luke currently sits 1st in the league for Under 11 boys, beating some very strong runners from good clubs.
Sophia Diss (under 13) and Amy Thacker (under 11) are also having a fantastic cross country season. Sophia as always, has shown great consistant performances which has won her the U13 girls in every race and Amy has also shown some very strong performances. Both girls are 1st in the league in their respective age categories.
We have also had strong performances from Kinza Lewis, James Langley,
Bethany Turner, Katie Armitage, Samuel Jones and George Jackson. A special well done to Callum Tricker who in his first season of cross country running has completed every race with determination.
Halstead Juniors have a very young team and only have runners in 4 of the 6 age categories (boys and girls). This however has not affected their performance, after 3 races they currently lie 3rd team in the league and have winners in 3 of the age categories.
Congratulations must go to all of the Halstead juniors who have taken part in this league so far, the races are early in the morning and the weather is often very cold so well done to all....and of course thank you to the parents for bringing them, this would not be possible without your support.
Thanks to all race organisers and supporters!

Halstead Road Runner and distance specialist Matt Biggin completed the Doyen of the Downs in horrendous weather. This is a 30 mile off-road race and this year it was pretty much knee deep in mud the entire time. At one point the organisers had sent the competitors up a newly ploughed field. Impossible to run, barely possible to walk.
Regardless, 143 people finished and Matt came 44th in a time of 5.03.37.
Matt said “Great race and highly recommended in fabulous countryside”
Three Halstead Road Runners completed a 13 mile multi-terrain trail race at Ardleigh. In cold but bright conditions Don English, Bob Langley and Mike Grealy all completed the course in 1hr 42mins.
