Halstead Road Runners hope to see you again next year.
Halstead Road Runners hosted the 19th Halstead & Essex Marathon from Halstead Leisure Centre. More than 500 runners were set on their way by Halstead Mayor David Hume and HRR Chairman and Marathon Race Director Keith Thorogood. Keith and his team have worked tirelessly for months to prepare and deliver this wonderful event for North Essex.
The undulating course which takes in the villages of Colne Engaine, Twinstead and Pebmarsh before returning to Halstead, looked wonderful in the early Summer sunshine. After such a tough Winter in which many of the Marathon runners would have had to train and prepare week after week it was a relief for many. New lambs frolicked in the fields, the sea of yellow oil seed rape caught the eye.
The people of North Essex turned out in their masses. Some playing musical instruments, others handed out jelly babies (a staple favourite for Marathon Runners). People of all ages cheered the runners all the way. The post race comments from the runners were extremely positive. Praising the volume of the encouragement, the fact that many thought they were treated like VIPs. The event was likened to having the atmosphere of a sporting travelling carnival!
Amongst the many runners, HRR were delighted to welcome Pete Digby and Paul Milson who pulled a 40 stone Aga cooker around the 26.2 mile undulating course. This was to raise money for the Afghanistan Trust and Parachute Regiment. Pete and Paul stopped the clock in a remarkable 5:49:00. A truly amazing charitable effort from both men.
John Dawson from the 100 Marathon Club unfortunately had a minor fall on the course. John was helped to his feet by Chief Marshall Don Wilson and fixed up by Colchester Hospital. John, a man who had already completed 399 Marathons, had the steely determination to return to the course post Hospital and complete his 400th Marathon. The time at this point was past 8.30pm in the evening and Keith Thorogood made a special trip out to welcome John on the finish line.
The race was led home by Denys Olefir from the Ukraine, running for Newmarket Joggers. Denys stopped the clock well under 3 hours in 2:43:24. Malcolm Muir from Ilford AC and Mohammed Ismali from Herne Hill followed close behind. The first female home was Leanne Harling from Serpentine RC in a time of 3:03:55. Leanne was followed home by two local runners, Nikki Brockband from Springfield Striders 3:11:34 and Emily Zethraeus from Gt Bentley 3:19:14.
First 3 Male Runners:
1st Denys Olefir, Newmarket Joggers, 2:43:24
2nd Malcolm Muir, Ilford AC, 2:44:51
3rd Mohammed Ismali, Herne Hill Harriers, 2:46:41
235th Neil Poulter, 3:58:38
268th Andrew Wilmot, 4:08:08
425th Daniel Hollinshead, 4:50:37
446th Terry Rivers, 4:56:59
455th Daniel Smith, 4:58:18
488th Matt Biggin, 5:22:46
HRR Daniel Hollinshead only decided to enter the race the Friday before. Daniel was delighted to complete the course in 4:50:37. Special mention to ex HRR Chairman Ian Sutcliffe now living in the far North of Scotland. Ian stormed around the course in a wonderful 3:31:51 giving him 90th place.
HRR would like to say a special thanks to Halstead Leisure Centre, Ramsey College Team, Air Cadets, Woodlands Gym, Tabor Centre, Halstead in Bloom, Gosfield School, Holmes and Hills Solicitors, Lambert Chapman LLP, Havering 90 Joggers, Witham RC, Bentley RC, Tiptree Runners, Grange Farm and Dunmow runners, Sainsburys, Halstead Tyre and Exhaust and Eat Natural. Without whom this event would not be so professional and enjoyable.
In due course, HRR will make significant donations to local charities from the Marathon proceeds.
HRR look forward to welcoming you all again for the 20th Halstead & Essex Marathon in May 2014. A truly significant milestone in this fantastic race.

A magnificent 7 Halstead Road Runners completed the Virgin London Marathon this weekend. Congratulations to all from everyone at Halstead Road Runners. The group have put in an enormous training effort across the nasty Winter months and have achieved fantastic results. Special mention to Jo and Glynn for completing their Marathon debut. Gavin Allen led the group home with an amazing time of 02:44:03 which puts him inside the first 300 finishers in a field of more than 36,000 runners!
Glynn Stone took time to articulate his first feelings post race:
“My first thoughts about London are it's amazing. The people of London are great they stand for hours shouting encouragement . You run round one corner and there could be a reggae band playing, then turn a corner then there will be a brass band blasting away. As for the actual race, I would say just the sheer amount of people running can make it hard work to thread you're way through if you are looking for a fast time. The course is great nice and flat and I’m happy with my 3.51. “
Glynn Stone, 03:51:37
Keith Thorogood, 04:58:58 (recovering from injury)
Jo Hinckley, 04:41:11
Terry Rivers, 05:01:34
Gavin Allen, 02:44:03 (running for Braintree AC)
Stuart Prestney. 03:18:03 (running for Braintree AC)
Stewart Ellis 03:22:41 (running for Braintree AC)

So, that's it for another season! Well done to everyone who took part.
Wendy Carter takes 1st place in the women's handicap and deserves congratulations on two counts. Firstly because this is her third year in a row of winning the handicap, and secondly because she completed all 6 races this season (the only HRR runner to do so!).
John Markham deservedly picks up the 1st place in the men's handicap for the second year running. After his 'break out' year last year he has achieved the even harder task of continuing to make significant improvements this year. In fact he saved his best performance for the last race!
Final standings of the winter handicap for 2012/13:
Women's:
1st Place: Wendy Carter with 66 points
2nd Place: Lorraine Garnham with 27 points
3rd Place: Peri Collins with 21 points
Men's:
1st Place: John Markham with 248 points
2nd Place: Andy Carter with 196 points
3rd Place: Mick Purkiss with 175 points
For a more detailed breakdown and full list of the final standings please see the attached PDF.
